| 2009-03-14 | How can you verify this is really you -- Dr. Ka-fu Wong of HKU? Two weeks ago, I received an email from a colleague asking me to send him my research paper. He mentioned that he was responding to his brief communication with me in xiaonei (http://www.xiaonei.com, a chinese version of Facebook). A couple day ago, a student told me that she found me in xiaonei. The problem was I did not even had a xiaonei account! I was greatly disturbed by these two indidence. So, I decided to create a xiaonei account. Upon creating the account, I search for persons with identical name. To my surprise, I found 28 persons sharing the same chinese name ( 王家富 ) as mine, and 33 persons with my "nickname" ( 王家 ?) . Among these 61 persons, two claimed that they were from HKU. They also post my photos and writings in their blog. I am not surprised to find people with names identical to mine. No one should. But I am greatly disturbed by these two persons impersonating me in xiaonei. My photos in my website and my writings in "My Journal" (this page) has been copied and pasted onto their blog. It looks so real that some of my friends and students might be tricked if the impersonators have bad intentions. Do they have bad intentions? I do not think so. In fact, I think they are two of my students who like me very much.
As soon as I created my account, I got an invitation from one of the impersonators. What would you do if you were me? I accepted his invitation. I wrote "him" a message. In the message, I kindly thank him for spreading my writings and I told him the impersonation has been causing annoyance and confusion. Of course, I kindly ask him to stop impersonating me. I got a reply from "him": "I can't tell whether you are himself or not, if the real Mr Wong is registered in xiaonei, this account will be cancelled automatically."

Do I like people spreading my journal? Definitely. Please do spread my journal to your friends. If you want to spread my journal, I will appreciate if you spread it using your real name (not by impersonating me) and if you include a proper citation of the source (http://kafuwong.econ.hku.hk/teaching/journal/). By using your real name and including a proper citation, you are paying me some respect.
What do we learn this lesson? Do not easily share your "very personal" thoughts to other in the xiaonei or facebook unless you can verify their identity clearly. We do not know who we are talking to.
